HP OpenView HARMONi For
Customer Network Management
Hewlett-Packard and You:
Winning Together in Telecommunications
The Telecommunications Challenge
Without exception, every business uses telecommunication
services, and in today's business environment,
telecommunications is often a strategic weapon used to maintain
that competitive edge. Rapid technology advancements, the
emergence of standards, an increase in customer expectations,
plus the move towards a deregulated industry creates new
challenges and exciting opportunities. To meet these challenges,
the telecommunications service providers need to become more
competitive. This is not an easy task. To do so requires
concentrating on customer needs, increasing existing services,
and introducing new value-added services.
Customer Network Management
One such service is Customer Network Management (CNM).
CNM, simply put, is an interface for the flow of customer
subscribed telecommunications service information from the
provider to the customer's premise. Hewlett-Packard is proud to
provide this service through its HP OpenView HARMONi network
management software.
HP OpenView is Hewlett-Packard's product strategy for network
and system management. It is the result of Hewlett-Packard's
long-recognized expertise in providing multi-vendor network
solutions. While no single vendor can provide a complete
solution to Customer Network Management, Hewlett-Packard has a
track record in delivering quality and reliable solutions
capable of managing today's mission-critical asset-the
information network
The HP OpenView HARMONi Platform
The HP OpenView HARMONi includes key components of the HP
OpenView Distributed Management platform, and management
services and tools, that simplifies and minimizes the task of
developing telecommunications management solutions. Its
objectoriented and distributed application design techniques
enable the telecommunications service provider, management
application developers, and service subscribers to:
* integrate telecommunications network management for both
provider and customer
* customize customer-controlled network management
functions to suit different industries and companies
* extend the management of subscribed services into the
customer premise
* control the network management features that help a
customer's business grow
HP OpenView HARMONi Platform for Customer Network Management
The HP OpenView HARMONi platform simplifies the development of
Customer Network Management solutions with an integrated set of
management services and tools. These tools and services give
subscribers controlled access to the telecommunications
providers' service information.
For example, a Value-Added Integrator at the telecommunications
service provider's premise can maintain information of services
purchased by the subscriber. The subscriber's own service
information is extended and stored on the Customer Premise
Station(CPS). The platform lets CNM applications integrate and
share information from a variety of sources. These applications
can run on either system.
The platform provides a secure environment for integrated
management, providing the customer with true integration of all
network components. This encompasses both private and public
network resources.
The HP OpenView HARMONi platform for CNM is based on
international standards.
The HP OpenView HARMONi platform for CNM includes:
* an industry standard graphical user interface that can
construct and display different views of the telecommunications
network
* a standard communications infrastructure that supports and
integrates multiple telecommunications applications through
standard application programming interface (API)
* a common data storage that provides streamlined
data-relationship management
* centralized management of data and relationships for
telecommunications network elements and services modelled as
objects
* a practical and realistic security framework
* tools and services to enhance the productivity of both the
application developer and the end-user
* DataWalker, a generic CNM application utility
* a basic set of CNM object classes and relationships
* a comprehensive set of development tools; the first release
includes:
- a CNM object class translator, giving developers the
flexibility to define their own managed CNM object classes
- a metadata store which allows applications to retrieve object
definitions programmatically
Features
* Consistent user interface
- menu customization
- easy application integration
- supports X11/Motif interfaces and applications
* Standards-based communication infrastructure
- automatic connection management
- transparent managed object location
- CMIP and CMISE support
- extended LAN support
* Common data storage
- integrates each subscriber's telecommunications service
information
- provides information in object-oriented format and stores them
in a uniform manner
- makes the same set of data available to all applications
* Centralized data and relationship management
- applications share user-specific rather than
application-specific views
- presents multiple views from a single application
- reduces application development complexity and ensures
consistency of views
- allows the basic CNM object model to be either developer or
user extensible and accessed programmatically
* Embedded security system
- partitions all customer's data-allows access to the database
using the user identity validation method
- controls access via an administration application using access
control lists.
- logs and reports all access violations
* Event management services
- provides registration and distribution of events across systems
- filters events
- provides transparent event distribution
* DataWalker, a generic object-oriented CNM application utility
- uses a graphical interface to the data objects and relationship
management services
- creates graphs of functional relationships among entities
- creates graphical map views of network topologies
- allows creation, deletion and modification of CNM objects and
relationships
- establishes relationship among physical and logical objects
- displays data graphically according to the users' need -lets
users browse stored objects and relationships
- enables programmatic access to store topologies and graphs
* CNM object class translator tool
- translates network management managed object class definitions
into SQL formats
* Localizability
- 8-bit and 16-bit
Benefits
* Simplifies application development
- uses object-oriented approach
- contains pre-defined CNM object classes to reduce analysis
effort
- eliminates the complexity of constructing, maintaining and
accessing the stored topologies and graphs
* Protects both provider's and customer's investment
- uses OSI-based, open, modular and distributed network
management architecture.
- based on latest technology and conforms to emerging
telecommunication standards
* Protects customer's privacy
- built-in security features of HP OpenView HARMONi platform
ensures subscribers can only view subscribed services only.
* Easy to use graphical interface
- intuitive graphical representation of subscribed
telecommunication services
- uses simple window operations to construct, maintain and access
topologies and graphical representations
* Open and extensible environment
- includes fully documented, well-defined supported set of
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for internal and
external developers
- allows applications to access common pool of information
* End-to-end management
- enables subscribers to achieve visibility and control of the
telecommunications network services
- provides integrated network management by allowing subscribers
to organize their management information;
telecommunications-supplied components will become visible as
components on the subscribers' total network
